I could not be more proud and happy for my BJJ bro Mike, because he won his debut MMA fight last night, with an armbar, less than three minutes into the first round! The announcer (who I don’t believe ever pronounced his last name “Aquila” correctly ;) said Mike was a “Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu specialist”, and that’s exactly what he looked like up in that cage. As soon as he locked up the armbar, I knew he had it, and I told my husband “It’s over.”
I only stayed at the arena long enough to watch Tumbleweed’s fight, and most of my teammates probably didn’t even know I was there, because they were on the floor and I was up in the stands, but that allowed me to be my usual ginga ninja shy self, and also to not be too embarrassed to cry after Mike’s fight, but they were tears of joy and relief (yes, I am a sentimental fool). Joe commented that I’m probably old enough to be Mike’s mother, and I do feel familial towards him, but it’s more like sisterly, as if he’s the brother I never had (who beats me up all the time ;).
Mike got the submission of the night for his armbar, but I don’t think there’s anything else I could say about the fight that wouldn’t be better learned by watching it, because actions speak louder than words, so here’s the video. “Don’t believe me, just watch…” -Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars
