I Choose You!

When your favorite partner is drilling with someone else.I’ve been lucky to have Tumbleweed as my drilling partner most of the time in the advanced classes at Lincoln BJJ, but on the rare occasions when he isn’t there (or he’s working with someone else), my typical plan is to scan the room for the person who weighs the least, and then stake my claim by sitting near them while the techniques are being demonstrated. This method usually works, but my shyness still makes it hard for me to actually ask someone to be my partner, unless I’ve known them for awhile, so in Mike’s absence on Wednesday night, I choose to work with MMA James. He only recently began training with us at LBJJC, but I’ve known him longer than most of my other BJJ bros, because we first met during sparring class at the dojo many years ago, before I had even thought about doing Jiu-Jitsu.

The theme in the advanced classes for the past couple of weeks has been the omoplata, and it’s one of those cases where I think I know something, then I discover that there are more intricate details than I ever realized, but the good news is that over the course of working on it recently, Professor Greg said my technique has definitely improved! One of the things we focused on Wednesday was completely breaking down our partner’s posture before finishing the sub, and when James was practicing it on me, it felt very demoralizing, because I was belly down on the mat with my arm behind my back, and he laughed when I told him I thought he was about to handcuff and arrest me, but we were just drilling, so I wasn’t even resisting! ;)

I didn't choose the thug life, the thug life said "I choose you."I enjoyed having LL Cool James as my partner on Wednesday, and I didn’t mind that he called me “G”! Working with him was yet another reminder of how far I’ve come since I started training at Lincoln BJJ Center, because back when he and I used to roll at the dojo, I know that he took it easy on me, but he still beat my ass, and now I’m not sure if he’s taking it easy on me or not, but he certainly isn’t beating my ass! It might be different if he was allowed to punch and kick me, but training with James again makes me feel really good about the amount of progress I’ve made in my grappling since back in the day.
