I went to the noon beginner class at Lincoln BJJ yesterday, and for the first time ever, the female students outnumbered the male! There were four women and three men (not including Professor Greg), and we took a picture at the end of class to commemorate the momentous occasion!
One of the women was a new student who’s married to another student, and she and I were the closest in weight, so we partnered together. The techniques we worked on were ippon seo nage, collar choke from back mount, and guillotine from guard, and she was picking things up really well. I was nervous about practicing the throw, because I don’t like throwing, and sometimes newer people are scared, which makes it worse for both of us, but she seemed remarkably relaxed, and did a great job. During the positional sparring from back mount, I didn’t want to overwhelm her, so I tried to be slow and methodical, and she was tapping before I fully completed the chokes, but it wasn’t as bad as I was back in the early days, when I would sometimes tap as soon as someone put their arm around my neck!
There are currently more women training at LBJJC than at any other point in all of my six years of Jiu-Jitsu (I think we’re now up to eight, which means half of us were there yesterday!), and I’m so happy to see it. I really didn’t think I’d ever attend a BJJ class with more women than men, and while we are still a minority in total, it’s awesome to see our numbers growing!
