A few months ago when I was in class at Lincoln BJJ, and my back was killing me, The Professor asked me if I wanted to use his foam roller, so I gave it a try, and it felt like I was being tortured! Then a few weeks later when I was at the LMAC dojo for Ethridge Jiu-Jitsu class, I noticed they had one, so I decided to give it another shot, and it felt great! I wasn’t sure if the difference was because I was less sore the second time, or because Greg’s roller was the bumpy kind, but recently when I bought one for myself, I went with the smooth variety, like the one at the dojo.
I had no idea how sore my entire body was until I started using the foam roller at home, and my back has been popping so much, I might not have to go to the chiropractor anymore! It is kind of torturous when I’m rolling out hot spots, but afterward, I feel so much better. The other day when I was using the roller on my tweaked hip, I was groaning in pain, so Joe asked if it was helping or hurting me, and I said “Both.”
It’s great for working out the kinks, and it’s almost like getting a full-body massage, except you don’t have to pay for it every time, and it lasts however long you want. I think I’ve used the foam roller every single day since I bought it a couple weeks ago, and I like the fact that I can help ease my pain from rolling by rolling!
