Due to the holidays this past week, I broke my own rule “never go more than three days without training Jiu-Jitsu”, and I actually didn’t train for five days in a row. What I mostly did instead was eat a bunch of cookies and candy, so I felt pretty sluggish when I went back to open mat yesterday! Since LBJJC had been closed since Tuesday, I expected a crowd, but there ended up being just about ten of us, and I trained with The Man, Tumbleweed, Triple J, Mo Money, Sweeney Todd, and Mama Bear. After several days off from BJJ, I was so happy to be grappling again, I didn’t even care that most of the people I rolled with took my back and choked me! Okay, I might’ve cared a little bit, but I’m not dwelling on it.
Bhunava and I just did some positional grappling, so she didn’t take my back or choke me, but if we had free-rolled, it might’ve been a different story. Conan also didn’t take my back, but that’s because he was going light, and yet he still subbed me with an armbar. At one point when I had him in side control and he was moving around, he asked me if I felt like I was on a boat, so I said “Yes, and I want the boat to turn over!”. What I meant was that I wanted to take his back, but I’m lucky the boat didn’t capsize and trap me underneath!
Even though I spent most of open mat yesterday feeling like I was drowning, I was glad to get back to training. Conan, Mike, and Josh all gave me good advice, Mo gave me some compliments, Bhuvana gave me a bear hug, and Brian gave me a banana when I started to feel shaky! They also gave me several bow-and-arrows, a few armbars, a guillotine, and a wristlock, and in those cases, I think it really is better to give than to receive, but I still appreciated the gifts (which is good, because I think those guys have a strict no-return policy. ;).
