Starve a fever, choke a cold

I’ve had a bad cold for the past week, which means I haven’t been able to roll, so it’s felt more like a month! Even though I’m still not completely well, I went to open mat at Lincoln BJJ yesterday, because Jiu-Jitsu withdrawal was setting in. Thankfully, despite not being able to guarantee that I wasn’t contagious, Conan was kind enough to slow-roll with me for about an hour.

I should take some of this for my cold!I hadn’t slow-rolled for awhile, and it was a nice change of pace. Other than the fact that I wasn’t feeling great, it was also helpful because normally when I’m grappling, I seem to spend a lot of time reacting, especially against more advanced students. Even when I try to be aggressive, I often end up on defense, and I don’t always know what happened. By slowing things down, I could see some of the details that I need to work on, and I was able to ask a lot of questions. Not only did it relieve my withdrawal pains, but the exercise also helped with my cold, so I felt much better afterward.

At one point while we were rolling yesterday, I told Conan I didn’t want to waste too much of his open mat time, so he asked “Are you getting anything out of it?”, and I answered “Yes.”, to which he responded “Then I’m happy.” While it was definitely good for me, I can’t imagine that he got very much out of slow-rolling with me (except possibly a cold!) so I appreciate his help.
