I was starting to think that the beginner no-gi class on Sundays at Lincoln BJJ was really going to be an advanced class, since more advanced students have been showing up (and we’ve been working on more advanced techniques), but yesterday everyone except me was a white belt! Another reason it doesn’t always seem like a beginner class is because it sometimes runs over the allotted hour, which happened yesterday, and sadly, I had to be somewhere. I left when class was supposed to end, but we didn’t start grappling until five minutes til, so I only got to roll one time. Conan actually tried to make me sit out that roll, but I was like “I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger!” I was already disappointed that I had to leave before class was over, especially since there was no Ethridge Jiu-Jitsu yesterday, and I was still raring to go after only an hour!
The one roll that I had yesterday was positional grappling from side-control, against a one-stripe white belt. The goal for the person on bottom was to reverse or pull guard, and the top person was supposed to try to mount or submit. I chose to be on bottom, but then I regretted that decision, because it was actually fairly easy for me, which was a surprise (since the white belt I was grappling with is not completely unskilled). I probably should’ve worked my top game instead.
When the positional grappling started, I reversed my partner right away, and he commented on how quickly it happened, so when we reset I let him know what he did wrong. I told him that he had allowed me to push his head up enough that I was able to hook my leg over it and reverse him, and I said to not let me do that anymore. After that, I escaped to guard several times, but I wasn’t able to reverse him again. He never even came close to submitting me, then at the very end, when I was stuck in half-guard, he was finally able to mount me.
Lately I’ve been going to the advanced classes more often than the beginner, so it still feels kind of strange to succeed (without my partner taking it easy on me), and I’m reminded of the time Conan said that I don’t know how dangerous I am. In that case, it might actually be a good thing that I wasn’t on top for that roll yesterday, because I think I would rather shepherd the white belts through the valley of the darkness than attempt to destroy my brothers. ;)
