I was already feeling sore and tired before the kids’ class even started yesterday, then by the time it ended and the adult advanced class began, I was drained. After the warm-ups my body felt like one giant bruise, and I wanted to quit, but I wouldn’t let myself. Then, of course, we didn’t have a technique portion of class (where we get to sit against the wall and rest while Greg is demonstrating the techniques), instead it was all non-stop drills. I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to make it to the end of class, but I told myself that even if I just did everything slowly, I would keep going. I wanted to stop, but I never did, I pushed through the wall. Then about halfway through class, I started feeling better, and I made it all the way through my final roll with Ray!
It was a good thing, too, because my roll with The Doggfather at the end of class made it all worthwhile! Even though I was dog tired, I managed to do some good things against Ray. At one point I had him in my guard and I kept trying to pull him into me to get his posture, but he kept pulling away, so finally I thought “Fine, I’ll just hip bump you.” and I was actually able to time it correctly and pull it off! That is not a sweep I hit very often, and Ray gave me mad props for getting it.
After that he reversed me, ending up in my guard again, and he was taunting/encouraging me to try to submit him. I realized his arm was in an excellent place for me to set up an omoplata, which I did, and when he tried to roll out of it, I actually caught him and held him down! I really thought I was going to tap him at that point, and it probably would’ve worked on a “lesser” student, but he somehow managed to escape. Still, that is by far the closest I have ever come to submitting Ray! The omoplata is also not a technique I go for very often, so I’m pretty happy that I almost succeeded.
So, yesterday I found out what’s on the other side of the wall, and I’m happy to say that it’s basically the same thing that’s over the rainbow! “And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true”.
