As the waves encircle,
I look outward for a life preserver,
But I’m the only one who can prevent the drowning.
Trying to not get washed away,
Gasping for breath, struggling to survive,
Until the tide turns once again.
I could head for the shore,
Content to observe the world from cold comfort,
Never risking, always safe.
But I would rather swim a thousand times
In the tears that threaten to consume me,
Than cower in fear.
I will keep fighting the pain,
Challenging it, taunting it,
Because it cannot defeat me.
