The Tide is High

A head full of fears has no space for dreams. My confidence ebbs and flows like the tide,
In phase with the moon,
Rising up, only to come crashing down.

As the waves encircle,
I look outward for a life preserver,
But I’m the only one who can prevent the drowning.

Trying to not get washed away,
Gasping for breath, struggling to survive,
Until the tide turns once again.

I could head for the shore,
Content to observe the world from cold comfort,
Never risking, always safe.

But I would rather swim a thousand times
In the tears that threaten to consume me,
Than cower in fear.

I will keep fighting the pain,
Challenging it, taunting it,
Because it cannot defeat me.

“I’m not the kind of girl who gives up just like that, oh no…” -Blondie
