My BJJ blue belt is so new and stiff that it will not stay tied for more than thirty seconds. I swear if you just stared at my belt really hard, it would untie itself. I’m afraid I’m going to poke an eye out with it, or that when it comes undone, it will tangle around, and end up strangling me! It’s quite possible, because Conan claims that blue belts have magical powers, and I’m not certain if mine thinks I’m worthy. It might keep untying itself because it wants to get away from me (or do away with me!), so that it can be free to find a new owner!
My other blue belt, the one from the Jiu-Jitsu program at the dojo, is quite the opposite, it never comes undone. It’s so worn that it’s already been resewn once, and now it’s coming apart again. I wore that belt for approximately two and a half years, and it shows.
The sad shape of my old belt is part of the reason I chose to get a new belt when I tested at Lincoln BJJ Center, but it wasn’t the only reason. I figured if I was starting over in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, then I should do it right, and get a BJJ belt (which is distinguished from other belts, by the black section for stripes).
I do still wear my old blue belt during Ethridge Jiu-Jitsu class at the dojo, but most of the time I wear the new one, and I spend a ridiculous amount of time re-tying it. Hopefully it will start to loosen up soon, and accept me as it’s owner! I suppose I just have to keep wearing it (I mean in class, not out to dinner or anything like that!).
Speaking of belts…yesterday during our Ethridge class, my husband tested for his yellow belt! Since the Jiu-Jitsu program at the dojo doesn’t have stripes, there’s a yellow belt between white and blue. I think Joe was overdue to test (it was actually my suggestion for him to be tested), and I’m pretty sure he passed. It’s nice that he won’t be a white belt anymore, but then he’ll have a colored belt in four different martial arts; Karate, Judo, Daitoryu, and Jiu-Jitsu. However, he doesn’t have any magical blue belts, and I have two, so at least I’m still ahead on that, even if I suspect that one of them is trying to get rid of me!
