For all my feelings of ineptitude last week at not being able to do much against the white belts, I actually submitted two of them in the beginner class yesterday! The second one was even with the technique that we had worked on, the Rickson choke (aka paper cutter), which I only recently learned, and had never successfully pulled off before!
It did help that we were doing positional grappling, so I got to start off in side control. Still, it’s not very often (maybe never?) that I’ve tapped out two different people on the same day, and neither of them was with an armbar from guard! The other sub I got yesterday was a paintbrush (aka keylock, or americana).
I also did not even come close to being submitted or mounted when it was my turn on the bottom! Since I spend so much time being dominated in the advanced class, sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that I do kind of know what I’m doing.
When I was in the advanced class on Wednesday, there was a student there who had not tested for his blue belt, so he was a white in a sea of blue. He’s a really nice guy, so I don’t think he meant it the way it sounded when he looked at me and said “Even you have a blue belt!” (and people wonder why I feel like I don’t deserve it! ;). Yes, even I have a blue belt, and regardless of who I submit, or who submits me, I earned it.
