Holy sweat, Batman, it’s hot! I’m pretty sure that yesterday was the hottest day of the year so far, the heat index hit about 110°. I usually prefer going to the earlier BJJ classes, but I was glad that class was at 8pm last night, because it had cooled down a tiny bit by then. I still started feeling lightheaded after the warm-ups, and I had to sit down for a few minutes. I managed to make it through class, and I even participated in king of the mat (after first deciding that I wasn’t going to). I did opt out of free-rolling at the end, but I wasn’t the only one! Only half of the people in class made it all the way to the end, and even they stopped a few minutes early. It was weird because I didn’t feel particularly hot, I was just drained.
Greg is on vacation this week, so Jerad, the other co-owner of Lincoln BJJ Center, took over the teaching duties. He regularly taught Jiu-Jitsu classes at the dojo, but last night was the first class I’ve been to at LBJJC that Greg did not teach. Jerad is a good teacher, and a dedicated student of the art. He asked if there was anything on our testing requirement sheets that we weren’t sure about, and I told him that I didn’t know the Rickson choke, so he was kind enough to work on it with us. When we were drilling, Mike commented that the choke is perfect for me, and that I should be doing it all the time!
Despite my depleted state, it was a red-letter day, because I managed to pull off a submission during king of the mat, but it was just on a newbie dude. Sadly, it wasn’t the Rickson choke, it was an armbar from guard, what a shocker (# sarcasm). After class, he told me “You’re really good!”, and I was thinking “No, I’m not, I’m just better than you, but that’s just because you don’t know anything at all, give it time.”
It was also a red-letter day because there was a stupid fly that decided to bite me, then later when it landed on the mat, I smacked that sucker dead! Yeah, revenge is a dish best served cold, fly! I guess I can’t say for certain that it was the same fly, but if not, they were probably kin.
Last night marked the end of my three week grappling restriction! I’ve been going to class, but I’ve only drilled, I haven’t been able to roll because I was still doing penance for the stitches in my face, and now the wait is finally over! I didn’t even whine too much during my time off, but it did feel really good to be grappling again, even if it was a brazilian degrees in The Center, aka The Hot Box!
