Spiders and Snakes

Our instructor at Lincoln Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center, Greg Lawson, is a 1st degree black belt under Mauricio ‘Tinguinha’ Mariano, and the word officially came down last night that Tinguinha will be visiting LBJJC on the last weekend in July, so now I feel like I have snakes in my belly, which are worse than butterflies! I’m super excited, but I’m also nervous, because in addition to teaching a seminar, he will also be testing us for our belts. Testing is nerve-wracking enough for me, and it’s even worse when it’s with someone who I don’t know, especially when that someone is a 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and the developer of spider guard!

Tinguinha BJJ AcademyNo matter how much I know

I won’t feel ready to test

so I’m just going to keep on training

and try to not sweat the rest

The way I’m looking at is, if I deserve to be promoted to blue belt, then I will be, and if I don’t, then I won’t. Damn, I can’t stop writing in rhyme! I guess that’s what snakes in your belly does to a person.

Aside from the testing aspect, it’s going to be awesome to get to meet Mr. Mariano, and to learn from him. As someone who is stranded in the middle of the country, that’s not something I thought would ever happen to me. Not many Brazilians come to Nebraska! I’m just really thankful that Greg decided to move back to his hometown, and open a BJJ school. I believe he’s done his teacher proud, and I hope I can do the same for him come testing time.
