Now that the big announcement has been made public, I can talk about the fact that there are going to be some upcoming changes in my Jiu-Jitsu training. Three of my teachers from Roseberry’s; Conan Schafer, Gregory Lawson, and Jerad Downs, are opening a new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school here in Lincoln later this month, and I intend to train there.
Conan started his Jiu-Jitsu training at Roseberry’s around 2002, and he has been the head instructor at the dojo for about the past eight years. He was instrumental in building the Jiu-Jitsu class up from a small rag-tag group into a respectable program that has grown tremendously.
Greg began BJJ in 2001 with Saulo Ribeiro, before moving to California in 2005 and studying with Mauricio ‘Tinguinha’ Mariano. He earned his black belt in 2011 under Tinguinha, and after moving back to his home state of Nebraska, he has been teaching at Roseberry’s for the past couple of years.
Jerad is the senior purple belt at the dojo, and he’s been the regular teacher of the Monday evening Jiu-Jitsu classes for a few years. All three of them are great guys and excellent teachers, with an abundance of knowledge to share.
I don’t know any of the details yet on location, class times, or cost, and I’m a little nervous about how it’s going to work out for me, but I am excited about starting this new phase of my journey. For one thing, I will be able to officially say that I train BJJ. Of course, it also means I might possibly have to trade in my blue belt for a white belt again, I don’t know how that will all work, but if so, I am perfectly okay with that (I’ve pretty much been trying to give my blue belt back ever since I got it anyway ;).
