“I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing, ’til they got a hold of me…”
A couple of weeks ago in Jiu-Jitsu class a discussion was had, and a consensus was reached, concerning the fact that I am too nice, especially to the white belts. I was told that my job was to submit them as often as I possibly can. Not with malice, not with ego, but with all of my awesome magical blue belt skills. I used to hold back, because I was too concerned with other people’s feelings, but learning how to deal with it is an important part of their journey. They also need to learn to respect me, and the belt I wear.
Yesterday when Ray taught class, I really had a chance to put that advice into play, because I rolled exclusively with white belts. Before open mat he had us do three-minute positional grappling drills, starting with the junior partner in five different forms of the senior’s guard. I submitted all of my partners except one (and he did not submit me), and I even submitted one of them twice in the three minutes. The one I didn’t submit is the only one who passed my guard, and I also swept and mounted the rest of them (except for the one I tapped with a triangle from spider guard). They were all younger and bigger than me, and all but one of them were male.
During open mat, I also submitted my white belt partner multiple times, and I spent the majority of the time mounted on top of them. Yeah, no more Mrs. Nice Guy, there’s a new G in town. For once, I’m going to do what I was told. “It’s like this and like that and like this and uh, it’s like that and like this and like that and uh…”
