It’s only been a week since I broke my wrist, but I’ve already started to succumb to the sadness of not being able to roll. To get me through the down times, I’ve been trying to think about some of my best grappling moments. Naturally, one that came to mind was the time I tapped Conan out. Yes, it really really happened! Of course, I know it only happened because he was kind enough to not submit me in thirty seconds (like we both know he can). Also, he gave me side control, but he did not let me submit him. I actually tricked him. Bwahahaha!
What usually happens when Conan lets me have side control is that I attempt to mount him (because I am oh, so greedy) and he reverses me, but this time I tried something different. I had my right arm around his head and I reached my left arm over his body, to make him think I was going after his far arm. While he was distracted with my fake armbar, he didn’t notice that I had grabbed my left gi sleeve with my right hand. As soon as his head lifted up enough, I slipped my left arm in there for an ezekiel, and he tapped. I honestly could not believe it. I even asked him “Was that a tap? Was it for real?” Yes and yes! I almost spontaneously combusted on the spot.
I don’t expect to ever get lucky and catch him slipping like that again, but I once tapped out The Boss! The possibility that it might happen again is reason enough to keep looking forward, and to do what I can to continue improving during my recuperation period. I might not be able to grapple, but I can keep learning.
