One good roll

I recently went through a spell where I was feeling somewhat indifferent about jiu-jitsu. It worried me a little, and I was afraid I might be losing my love for it. Luckily, all it took for me to get over it was one good roll the other day.

It was with someone I enjoy grappling with, and I told myself beforehand that I was going to try to not think about attacking, and just move and defend. Suddenly, it was like everything I tried worked! He couldn’t pin me down, and I felt like I was in control. As we flowed from one thing to another, I saw opportunities and took them, instead of trying to force things. Possibilities for submission started appearing everywhere I looked. When one thing didn’t work, I kept seeing other things that I could attempt. I never tried to muscle him into doing what I wanted him to do, I just took advantage of whatever he did. I felt his energy, and I redirected it.

In the end, he tapped me out, but that doesn’t matter to me at all. I feel like for the first time ever, I actually did jiu-jitsu that day. I stayed calm, and let my body feel what it needed to do, without my mind getting in the way. I was able to do jiu-jitsu without thinking about it, what could be better than that?
